You might remember that The Last of Us 2 was actually supposed to come with a multiplayer mode. Read my new sci-fi thriller novel Herokiller, available now in print and online. Hot on the heels of yesterdays announcement that The Last of Us will have multiplayer, Naughty Dog Community Strategist Arne Meyer has responded to fan concerns that multiplayer is being 'tacked on' over on the official PlayStation Blog. The Last of Us 2 multiplayer data suggests that Factions 2 could include a Battle Royale mode that is what data miners unearthed within the games multiplayer assets. Though I assume that The Last of Us Part 2 will get some sort of remaster or upgrade for PlayStation 5.
My guess is that we wouldn’t see Factions, or whatever this ends up being for many months after The Last of Us Part 2 releases, but by then, we’re going to start bumping up against the release of a whole new console generation, which brings even more questions. Refreshing my memory now, the ongoing nature of the Factions system was kind of cool, and I wonder if they’re evolving it into a more permanent games-as-service type thing, as I could see it fitting into that mold, to some extent. I wonder if they were swinging for the fences with something like a battle royale take on the concept, hence the “evolution” of Factions mode. It would be rather weird to craft a new IP just for the purposes of releasing this multiplayer, however.

The Last of Us Part 2, multiplayer or not, will be launching on PS4 on February 21, 2020.Presumably it would still take place in The Last of Us universe, though I suppose that’s not a prerequisite. The servers for The Last of Us' multiplayer were shut down on PS3 a few weeks ago, and with no follow-up to replace it the curious brand of on-the-go crafting, limited ammo and stealth gameplay in a PvP setting could be lost.

In an update posted by the Naughty Dog Twitter account yesterday, the team said that while they were disappointed in having to focus on TLOU Part 2's single player campaign, 'you will eventually experience the fruits of our team's online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II.' Sony representatives have since confirmed that this means there will be no multiplayer component in The Last of Us Part 2. I didn’t play the original game until a couple of years after launch - I never had a PS3 - and almost immediately decided to go for the Platinum after finally finishing it.
